SCHOOL 33 ART CENTER PRESENTS “SHUNPIKER” CURATED BY R.L. CROFT

EXHIBITION OPENS AUGUST 7 THROUGH OCTOBER 3, 2009

School 33 Art Center and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts present Shunpiker, curated by R.L. Croft.  The exhibition features four mature artists tempered by a strong sense of individuality, who make a deliberate, noncommercial art in spite of society’s increasing fascination with instant gratification and untried youth.  The exhibition opens Friday, August 7 through Saturday, October 3. An opening reception takes place Friday, August 7 from 6-9pm with a gallery talk beginning at 7pm.  Public programs are offered in conjunction with this exhibition and take place at School 33 Art Center, located at 1427 Light Street.  The gallery is open on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12-6pm. This exhibition is free and open to the public.  This exhibition was selected as part of School 33 Art Center’s annual Open Call for Curators.

The exhibition features artists Janet Van Fleet, Bill Gusky, Christine Hahn and Ken Huston. Shunpiker is an effort to avoid cherry picking particular elements of artists’ works to force-fit them into concocted themes.  This exhibition attempts to restore the individual as the point from which all themes flow.  It consciously aims to be “anti-thematic,” so that the artists’ individual journeys are not sacrificed for the marketing strategy of a unified front.  This proposition’s somewhat reversed approach has been to invite unknown, veteran artists to exhibit their work, bringing with them all the arcane details of unique life paths.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

R.L. Croft graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA in 1980.  He received an honorary degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in painting and printmaking.  As an artist in his own right, Croft has been a part of numerous shows taking place across the northeast since 1992.  He has been the recipient of several awards including the Marlboro Gallery National Juried Sculpture Exhibition, juried by Kristen Hileman, associate curator of contemporary art at the Hirshhorn Museum, where he placed third; and the Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize, where he was a two time semifinalist.

School 33 Art Center is dedicated to providing opportunities for artists through exhibitions, art classes, workshops, a Studio Artist Program, and special events.
