The 2009 Showcase of Nations Ethnic Festivals

Baltimore’s diverse communities offer exciting and entertaining weekend activities with the 2009 Showcase of Nations Ethnic Festivals.  During the spring through fall seasons, visit all the festivals for live music, an assortment of delectable foods, traditional dances, unique crafts, a great atmosphere and much more!  For more than 25 years, Baltimore has celebrated the beautiful culture of its residents.  This year, it continues the tradition with amazing festivals held throughout the city.  Admission and locations vary.  The 2009 Showcase of Nations Ethnic Festivals is presented by Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.

2009 Festival Schedule

May 29-31
Polish Festival, the Polish community kicks off the festival season with local, regional and national entertainment by polka bands and more; delicacies; Polish crafts including hand-made dolls and afghans, Friday 5-9pm and Saturday & Sunday noon-9pm, Patterson Park at Linwood and Eastern avenues. $

June 11-14 St. Nicholas Greek Folk Festival, a showcase of the Greek community featuring dancing, costumes, dishes including patstitsio, spanakopita, and souvlaki, and tours of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Thursday 7-11pm (tentative), Friday & Saturday 11 am–11pm and Sunday noon-10pm.  St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 520 South Ponca Street, 410-633-5020, www.greekfolkfestival.com.  FREE

June 27 & 28
LatinoFest, experience a lively weekend of Hispanic arts and culture with tradition music, clothing, crafts, cuisine and more, Saturday & Sunday noon-9pm, Patterson Park at Linwood and Eastern avenues, 410-563-3160, www.latinofest.org. $

July 3-5
African American Heritage Festival, a celebration of African-American ancestry, with nationally known entertainment and educational exhibits, Friday 5-10pm, Saturday noon-10pm and Sunday noon-8pm, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, 410-235-2227 ext. 211, www.aahf.net. $

July 10-12
Caribbean Carnival Festival, with a traditional island costumed parade; soca, reggae, and steel drum bands; live international entertainment, elaborate costumes, and Caribbean cuisine, Friday 5pm-9pm and Saturday & Sunday noon-9pm, Druid Hill Park, 410-230-2969, www.bmorecarnival.com. $

August 1 & 2
International Festival, a celebration of Baltimore’s cultural diversity with music, dancing, and a variety of ethnic foods, noon-9pm daily, Poly/Western High School near Falls Road and West Coldspring Lane, 410-396-3141. FREE

FestAfrica 2009, an African festival with traditional music, dances, food, crafts and art, Saturday & Sunday noon-8pm, Patterson Park at Linwood and Eastern avenues. 410-608-0420, www.festafricausa.com. $

Ukrainian Festival, a celebration featuring four dance groups, Ukrainian Easter Eggs demonstration, musicians, traditional crafts, Ukrainian beer garden and children’s activities, Saturday & Sunday noon-9pm, Patterson Park at Linwood and Eastern avenues, 410-687-3465, www.ukrainianfestival.net. $

September 12
