SCHOOL 33 STUDIO ARTISTS EXHIBITION ON JULY 9 THROUGH AUGUST 1
IN CONJUNCTION WITH ARTSCAPE’S CITY-WIDE EXHIBITS
School 33 Art Center and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts present the semi-annual Studio Artists Exhibition, featuring the work of all nine current School 33 artists-in-residence, and an exhibition essay written by Doreen Bolger, executive director of The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). The exhibition opens Thursday, July 9 through Saturday, August 1. An opening reception takes place Friday, July 10 from 5-8pm in conjunction with the city-wide Artscape gallery events. The closing reception and gallery talk with the artists takes place July 25 from 6-9pm at School 33 Art Center, located at 1427 Light Street. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12-6pm. Studio Artists Exhibition is an Artscape off-site exhibition and is free and open to the public.
Featured artists include: Anne Chan, Rosetta DeBerdardinis, Amanda Engels, Matthew Freel, Aaron Yamada-Hanff, Seon Kim, Kathleen MacKinnon, James Murphy and Bill Tamburrino
Beginning in late 2008, School 33 initiated the Studio Artists Mentoring Program as a commitment to fostering artistic growth in Baltimore. The Mentoring Program invites professional artists, curators, writers, and other arts professionals to hold one-on-one studio visits in an effort to provide critical and constructive feedback to each of School 33’s artists-in-residence. This year’s mentors included Jayme McLellan, Director of Civilian Art Projects, in Washington, D.C., Tony Shore, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) painting faculty and 2007 Sondheim Artscape Prize Winner, and Executive Director Doreen Bolger at The BMA.
A limited edition exhibition catalogue will be available. The 24 page collection will feature the works of each studio artists and the exhibition essay written by Doreen Bolger.
Since 1979, School 33 Art Center’s Studio Artists Program has provided exceptional studio spaces at subsidized rates to more than 120 professional artists. The Studio Selection Panel, comprised of local artists and arts professionals, selects resident artists through a review process. This program has been instrumental in providing a safe, nurturing community and workspace to both established and emerging artists in Baltimore. School 33 has also hosted a variety of artist residencies and programs that engage the studio artists in the center’s exhibition and educational programming. In addition to monthly open studios and rotating studio visits, the Mentor Program will now culminate with a Studio Artists’ Exhibition at School 33 in conjunction with the annual city wide arts festival, Artscape.
Artscape, America’s largest, free arts festival takes place Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18, noon to 10pm and Sunday, July 19, noon to 8pm. For more information about Artscape, visit www.artscape.org.
