Into the Light/Into the Dark, Curated by Timothy Nohe

Featured artists include: Bonnie Crawford Kotula, Phil Davis, John Sturgeon and Christian Valiente

School 33 Art Center and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts present Into the Light/Into the Dark, an exhibition curated by Timothy Nohe on Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, December 13.  The exhibition will feature the works of Bonnie Crawford Kotula, Phil Davis, John Sturgeon and Christian Valiente. An opening celebration takes place Saturday, November 1, from 6-9pm with a sound concert performance beginning at 8pm.  The opening concert will feature artists Steve Bradley, Andy Hayleck, Devin Hurd and Timothy Nohe as they meld elements of analog synthesis, acoustic and digital music.  This exhibition is a part of School 33’s Annual Call for Curators and is free and open to the public.  The gallery is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-4pm, with extended hours on Thursdays from 10am-7pm and Saturdays, 12-4pm.  School 33 Art Center is located at 1427 Light Street.

Into the Light/Into the Dark features three videographers and an installation artist, who work with light modulated through analog systems via low/lapsed technologies. The drive behind the exhibition is the impending transition of broadcast television from analog to digital transmission in February 2009.  In addition, a series of workshops take place on November 8, 15 and 22 from 1-4pm at School 33 Art Center.

Workshop schedule

*The Everyday Instrument with Tim Nohe

Saturday, November 8, from 1-4pm

Saturday, November 15, from 1-4pm

*Electronic Sewing with Bonnie Crawford Kotula

Saturday, November 22, from 1-4pm

The Everyday Instrument is a two-part workshop that shows participants how to create musical instruments out of everyday household objects.  During the workshop, guests will listen, invent, arrange sounds, and perform an impromptu concert that will be recorded and can be taken home in CD or MP3 format.  Children younger than 16 years-old should be accompanied by an adult.  Admission is $10 per participant.  Electronic Sewing workshop assists children in learning about electronic circuits.  Participants will be taught how to adapt circuits to light up tiny bulbs that will adorn clothes and accessories.  Each student should bring a personal garment or accessory, which they will modify with tiny lights and safe low voltage “button” batteries.  This workshop is geared towards fourth, fifth and sixth graders and is $20 per registered attendee.

Due to limited space, pre-registration is required for both workshops.  Please call School 33 at 410-396-4641 or email maggie.muth@promotionandarts.com to register.
