Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower Open Studio Tour:
Visit artists’ studios and support talented artists
on Saturday, August 23
The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower continues its open house season featuring impressive artwork from talented artists. The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower Open Studio Tour takes place on Saturday, August 23 from 11am-4pm. During this event, guests can visit artists’ studios, view or purchase works of art, and enjoy refreshments and light fare at the newly renovated Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, located at 21 S. Eutaw Street. This event is presented by Mayor Sheila Dixon and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.
The 97-year-old building has been transformed into a tower for visual and literary artists and now offers 12 floors of artist studio space. Four new artists have been added to the artist studios. Featured artists are Najwa Al-amin (oil & acrylic), Barbara Bryan (playwright), W. Scott Broadfoot (oil), Linda Day-Clark (digital photography), Martha Dougherty (watercolor), John David Ehlers, Jr. (oil, acrylic, and charcoal), Brian Glazer Gerber (oil & acrylic), Keith Haller (oil, acrylic and watercolor), Kevin Haller (oil, acrylic and watercolor), Meaghan Harrison (mixed media), Pearl Regmi (Moti) (oil & watercolor), Sarah Richards (writer print & radio), Joe L. Ruffin, Jr. (acrylic), and Patricia Truitt (oil & acrylic).
This historic structure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower was completed in 1911 and was the tallest building in Baltimore at the time. It has been a Baltimore landmark ever since. The tower was built by Captain Isaac Emerson, the inventor of the headache remedy Bromo Seltzer. The most interesting feature is the still-functioning tower clock, the face of which displays the word Bromo Seltzer instead of numbers. Each of the clocks’ faces measure 24 feet in diameter, one foot larger than the clock faces on London’s Big Ben. The famous clock atop the tower holds its own separate historic registration.
