BIGGEST FIREWORKS DISPLAY ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31 2009

Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts are pleased to announce the return of the Ports America New Year’s Eve Spectacular.  On Thursday, December 31 from 7pm-12:30am, the Baltimore Inner Harbor will be home to the region’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration.  Visitors and residents can enjoy holiday festivities including live music and a vivid midnight fireworks display.  For the third year, title sponsor Ports America has committed to supporting this annual event.

Ports America New Year’s Eve Spectacular draws thousands of visitors to downtown for a vibrant night of entertainment and thrilling fireworks.  Starting at 7pm, the Inner Harbor Amphitheater, located at Pratt and Light streets, will be buzzing with live music by a cappella group Part Harmony. Classic rock and blues band Blues Therapy electrifies the stage at 9pm.  The excitement continues with the official countdown to 2010.  At the stroke of midnight, the city rings in New Year’s Day by lighting Baltimore’s notable skyline with multicolored fireworks.  New for this year, the fireworks display is courtesy of Pyrotecnico.  Returning are the three barges, which make the fireworks special effects finale impressive and more enjoyable.  The show that is choreographed to music can been seen from the Inner Harbor as well as Fell’s Point, Harbor East and beyond.  Visitors can experience the fireworks while dinning at area restaurants and other attractions or from neighborhood parks and residences.

“Since its founding 303 years ago, the Port of Baltimore has been the engine to the success of our great City.  Since 1921 Ports America and its affiliate companies have been operating in this port and we are proud of the contribution that we continue to make to Baltimore’s economy.  We are among the largest employers of union labor in the city and directly and indirectly are responsible for over 19,000 jobs,” said Christopher Lee, Managing Partner of Highstar Capital and lead investor of Ports America.  “The fireworks salute these outstanding men and women who do so much every day for this great City of Baltimore and this great State of Maryland.  I want to thank them for giving us this important opportunity to celebrate that contribution.”
