Baltimore Farmers’ Market opens for the 2009 season

on Sunday, May 3 at 8 am

The 32nd annual Baltimore Farmers’ Market returns with the best deals and the freshest offerings in the region! On Sunday, May 3 at 8am, the market officially opens with live entertainment and new concessionaires. The festivities begin with the enjoyable sounds of the Baltimore Islanders Steel Band, which performs from 9am to noon. Market-goers can purchase crisp produce, lean poultry, pork and beef, flavorful spices, baked goods and crafts. Maryland’s largest producers-only market, located on Saratoga Street between Holliday and Gay streets under the Jones Falls Expressway, remains open every Sunday through December 20 from 8am to sell out, approximately noon. The Baltimore Farmers’ Market is presented by Mayor Sheila Dixon and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.

On opening day, there will be a selection of multicultural foods including Indian, Asian, Spanish, Caribbean, Cajun and more. Market-goers can browse ripe fruits, greens, herbs, preserves, dairy and nut products, pastries, plants, flowers and additional seasonal items. This year’s new vendors are the Chesapeake Greenhouse that specializes in ‘hydroponic’ farming; Berliner Cold Cuts, which has organically raised meat that is processed naturally; Brooks Salsa, a local merchant making salsa products from locally raised produce; Firefly Farms offering nine varieties of goat cheese and Springfield Lamb which produces lamb products. The market will be at full capacity by the end of June.

Visitors are encouraged to ride their bikes to the Baltimore Farmers’ Market. Bike racks will be available on-site. This event takes place rain or shine.
