EXPERIENCE THE SPLENDOR OF THE CARIBBEAN

CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL FESTIVAL ON JULY 10-12

Join the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Baltimore as it celebrates the 28th annual Caribbean Carnival Festival. Festival-goers can get a taste of island customs with authentic cuisine, arts & crafts, literature and live entertainment.  Through the weekend, there will be engaging and entertaining performances by locally and internationally acclaimed calypso, soca and reggae musicians. Weekend festivities take place in Druid Hill Park on Friday, July 10 from 5-9pm, and Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 from 12-9pm.  General admission is $10 and free for children under the age of 12.  The Caribbean Carnival Festival is a part of the 2009 Showcase of Nations Ethnic Festivals, presented by Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.

The carnival celebration holds its annual street parade displaying colorful and masquerade inspired costumed dancers and steel bands.  The parade kicks off on Saturday, July 11 at 12pm on the 5400 block of Park Heights (between Rogers and Hayward avenues).  Mayor Sheila Dixon will serve as grand marshal.  Additionally, participating special guests include the honorable Anthony Johnson, Ambassador of Jamaica, Delegate Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and other city and state officials.

Food vendors offer a wide variety of traditional fare with Roti, Pelau, brown stew chicken, jerk chicken, rice and peas, curry goat, coconut juice, sugar cane and more.  Visitors can take a small part of the Caribbean home with them with art, paintings and photography, literary works, handmade accessories and other collectibles.

The festival continues to represent the diversity within Caribbean culture and inspire a greater appreciation of ethnic heritage.  The annual event also strives to demonstrate the importance of integration and togetherness of all backgrounds.
